| Splash Out Hunger at KING Valentine Classic | |

Dear KING families:
In partnership with Northwest Harvest, which was formed in Seattle
in 1967, as The Ecumenical Metropolitan Ministry (EMM), by a group
of Seattle community leaders, King Aquatic Club Boosters will be
sponsoring a food drive at our February 11-12 KING
VALENTINE CLASSIC Invitational swim meet.
The EMMs main purpose
was to be a short term solution to help fill in the gaps to
alleviate the growing problem of hunger in the Seattle area. In
1970, The Boeing Company began a round of layoffs which saw 60,000
jobs lost over 18 months. Because these people were not poor or
homeless they were disqualified by social services. EMM worked
closely with other organizations to collect food and respond to
this crisis. At this time, Northwest Harvest became a separate,
secular entity and grew from a Seattle resource into a statewide
hunger relief agency, distributing food to a network of independent
food banks around Washington State.Decades after the Boeing
unemployment crisis, the need for emergency food assistance
remains. Today, Northwest Harvest secures approximately 24 million
pounds of food each year for distribution through a network of more
than 325 partner food banks, meal programs and high need
schools.
We are hoping that each
and every KING family will participate in this drive by bringing a
food donation. Monetary donations are also welcome. Checks should
be made out to Northwest Harvest. Northwest Harvest is a 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organization, and all donations are tax-deductible to the
extent allowed by law.
Remember, We, You, &
I CAN make a difference in our community!
Thank you for your support,
